Getting Pregnant After Birth Control

Did you know that it is essential to give the body at least 6 months to clear out the old synthetic hormones from birth control before you fall pregnant?

 

As a Naturopath who specialises in fertility health, I work with my patients to achieve their most optimal health POST-pregnancy to make sure they have the best chances of a successful pregnancy. Most of my patients that are seeking my advice are somewhere in between coming off their hormonal birth control and want to get their body’s ready for pregnancy.

 

Hormonal birth control supplies your body with a high amount of synthetic hormones which can be

recycled back into your body, week after week.

 

If these synthetic hormones are not effectively removed prior to conception, they may interfere with the development of foetal growth and duration of gestation. In addition to this, the oral contraceptive pill depletes your body from important nutrients needed in pregnancy such as:

  • Vitamin B2, B6 & B12

  • Folate

  • Magnesium

  • Zinc

  • Selenium

  • Vitamin C & E.

Depriving our body of these nutrients can lead to defects. For example, a folate deficiency is shown to

cause neural tube defects in babies. One of the most common defects is Spina Bifida, which occurs in

the first weeks of pregnancy when the brain and spinal cord are forming.

 

There are limited research and information regarding the effects of synthetic hormones and their impact

on both mother and foetus. However, a recent study found a positive association between the use of

combination oral contraceptives and progestin-only pill (ie: mini pill) with preterm birth.

Delivering a baby pre-term can cause intellectual and developmental disabilities such as learning difficulties,

behavioural problems and neurological disorders and can also impact the mother’s emotional wellbeing.

 

In addition to this, I’d like you to take note of the chemicals and toxins you are exposed to in your

environment and the impact they may have on your foetus. You’ve most likely seen labels such as, “BPA

Free” on plastic bottles, tinned vegetables and other plastic objects. BPA, Bisphenol-A, is a well-known

xenoestrogen which mimics estrogen in your body and has been linked to breast cancers, obesity, early

puberty and heart disease. BPA is an endocrine disruptor which can pass in utero and be exposed

to your growing baby, impacting their development. Awareness of the chemicals and toxins in your

environment can help you prepare for a healthy pregnancy.

 

The reason why I’m sharing this information is to make you aware of why it is important to prepare your body to come off the pill at least 6 months prior to conception.
