Most of us started using deodorant around the age of 10 when our hormones started to change. No one wants to smell like B.O especially at school so the stronger- the better.

Years later, it is a daily routine to spray on or leather up with intense smells and synthetic ingredients that make us think that we are going to smell like ‘god’s greatest gift’ and leave us with dry armpits for over 48 hours! (really unnatural). For most of us wearing deodorant is such a habit that we have never asked ourselves, can deodorant be affecting my health?

The answer is yes!

Have you read the ingredients list on the back of your deodorant? Points to you if you can pronounce 80 per cent of the chemicals that are found in the impressive mix! These are some of the ingredients that you apply to your armpits every day:

  • Aluminium

  • Phthalate

  • Propylene glycol

  • formaldehyde

  • Parabens

  • Antibacterial substances

  • Artificial fragrance- it’s funny watching companies that try to summarise ‘the perfect scent’ in one image. They make you believe that you will smell like the ocean air, a field full of pansies and sex on legs. In reality, these artificial fragrances are playing a burden on your liver and are the leading cause of allergic contact dermatitis.

What’s the big deal?

Have you ever been sick and felt sore in your throat or under the armpits? That’s a sign that your lymph nodes are inflamed and your immune system is working hard to fight off toxins and infections. Your axillary lymph nodes get a hit of these nasty toxins each day and over time build up in your system. Studies have shown that antiperspirants containing aluminium have been linked to allergic dermatitis, Alzheimer’s, bone disease. For women, studies do not get better. Antiperspirants have been linked to breast cancer. The female breast tissue will have direct exposure to the toxins and heavy metals when we apply deodorant straight onto our armpits.

Additionally, using antiperspirant deodorant inhibits our body’s detoxification pathways by preventing sweating and increasing the body’s toxic load to make the liver work harder. A build-up toxins and heavy metals over time can lead to inflammation, weight gain, acne, hormonal imbalances, metabolic syndrome and autoimmune diseases.

To top this off antiperspirants will actually make you smell worst! This is because daily uses of the antiperspirants change the microbiome and stimulate odour-producing bacteria (gross!) It’s no wonder we feel like we need to spray on more during the
day or increase the antiperspirant action to 48 hours.

So what’s the alternative?

I can guarantee you that switching to a natural deodorant is so simple you won’t even break a sweat! Start with aluminium free deodorant which can be found at most popular supermarkets. Your nearest health food store has tones of different ranges from roll-on and sprays that will make the transition even easier.  If you would like to go one step ahead you can try making your own deodorant at home with some simple ingredients. Thrive Natural Health offers handmade, 100 per cent natural deodorant using essential oils that will guarantee you to smell amazing all day! You can purchase some online by visiting thrivenaturalhealth.com.au/shop.

Or even better make your own! The secret is the natural essential oil that you use must be antibacterial.

I use Lavender and lemon myrtle as my base in all of my deodorants- that is why it works!!!
